Midweek special - 46 years working at the dry cleaners
I stopped into the dry cleaners’ today. It was my first time in this location because the location we had used prior was closed in 2021. The woman who wrote up my ticket was the store manager and her picture on the wall said, “Serving you since 1976.”
I asked her, “Have you been at this cleaner almost 50 years?”
“Yes,” she said. “It’ll be 46 years this year.”
And that made me think what kind of a bond does someone have if they have worked for one company, doing much the same thing every day, for nearly 50 years? She seemed content to me - not burned out or mailing it in. How much of her identity is tied up with this job? How will she leave it and what will she do after she goes?
